Stop smoking

Free NHS support is available to help you stop smoking in a way that works for you.

Giving up smoking is not something you have to do on your own. Free NHS support and medication can make stopping more manageable and improve the chance of staying smoke-free.

Quit Your Way: East Lothian and Midlothian

NHS Lothian Quit Your Way offers free support from trained stop-smoking practitioners. Support can be provided face to face or by telephone. A practitioner can help you make a quit plan, manage cravings and discuss suitable medicines, including nicotine replacement therapy or varenicline where appropriate.

Help from a community pharmacy

Your local community pharmacy can also provide stop-smoking support and free nicotine replacement products when suitable. Contact the pharmacy first to check when a trained adviser is available.

Preparing to stop

  • Choose a quit date that gives you time to prepare.
  • Think about situations that trigger smoking and what you could do instead.
  • Ask people around you for support.
  • Use recommended medication correctly rather than relying on willpower alone.
  • If you have tried before, tell the adviser what helped and what was difficult.
